FFVIII Magic

Magic is an essential element in Final Fantasy VIII, you can either use it as your main offensive system, healing or junctioning to your characters. The more magics you have the better, just keep in mind that the maximum magic you can is 100 so try to collect as much as you can. There are two or more ways of obtaining magic, the first one is drawing (refer to the junction section on how to make the draw command appear during the battles ) you can draw roughly between 1-9 magic per draw depending on your character's levels and the type of magics. The second method is via the GF's ability, once your GF learn a certain ability he or she or it would be able to convert items that you have collected from battle into magics. The maximum HP for any characters is 9, 999 and 255 for any of the junctioned status so try not to use too much of the junctioned magic (actually don't use junctioned magics at all.)

Aero
A magical attack that does wind elemental damages to one enemy, does not work on some flying creatures
X
X
X
Aura
Allows characters to perform Limit Breaks without having low HP.
X
X
X
Berserk
Causes the victim to uses physical attack every turn, but it is twice as strong.
X
X
X
Bio
The best poison magic ever, it takes away your characters or monsters HP every round, it's useless against those that have BIO junctioned to their stat-defense.
X
X
X
Blind
One of the two elements that causes your enemies blindness, your foes will have less chance in damaging you (physical attacks only).
X
X
X
Blizzaga
The top ice magic, it does the a pack of damage to your foes. It works pretty well against fire based creatures such as Ruby Dragon, you could also use this magic to inflict damages to your normal enemies as well.
X
X
X
Blizzara
Blizzara is a middle class of ice magics, it works the same as Blizzaga but is not that good for junction.
X
X
X
Blizzard
The basic ice magic that is good for early on in the game but once you have access to the second or third level this magic could become pretty useless, does not junctions to well.
X
X
X
Break
The Break spell, if successful, gives its target the Petrify status. The Petrify status turns its victim into stone, and immobilized it for the remainder of the battle unless an ally heals him of the Petrify status. If everybody on one side of a battle is Petrified, they automatically lose the battle.
X
X
X
Confuse
The name says it all, it makes your characters or monster confusion. Your character would perform stuff randomly including healing your enemies and killing your own friends.
X
X
X
Curaga
Yep, it cures that's what it does. Curaga is the top healing magics, good for junctioning to HP or use in normal battles
X
X
Cura
It works the same ways as Curaga but heal less HP to your characters, it's all right for early on in the game.
X
X
Cure
The basic healing magic, works the same ways as he previous two but less effective. You could draw from various monsters or refine from items.
X
X
Death
A lot of monsters in Final Fantasy 8 are easily affected by death, it kills your foes in one shot with a random probability; but don't bother trying it on bosses.
X
X
X
Demi
Demi reduces its target HP by 1/4
X
X
Dispel
Dispel removes positive status effects (Haste, Regen, Protect, Shell, Aura, Reflect, Float, Double, and Triple) from an enemy. This is a very useful spell for bosses or enemies that like to cast lots of great status effects on themselves.
X
X
X
Double
A Double spell allows its target to cast two of the same spell consecutively in one turn, very handy in early boss fight Disc 1&2.
X
X
Drain
Takes the HP from the victim and return it to the caster, well in the actual battle you don't have the times to waste on such a spell because its damage worth almost nothing.
X
X
Firaga
Again the top fire magic good for junctioning to elemental attack or defense, good against ice enemies. Firaga does a lot damages but don't use it on Fire based creatures.
X
X
X
Fira
This attack is very similar to Firaga (see above), but is weaker and doesn't junctions to well.
X
X
X
Fire
This spell is like Firaga and Fira (see above), but is the weakest of the three and junctions the worst as well.
X
X
X
Flare
Flare causes major non-elemental damages to the enemies, although it's really powerful you'd probably better off use it as a junction magic.
X
X
X
Float
This spell causes its target to float, making it avoid elemental Earth magic. This spell has a double effect. It is mostly used to on allies to avoid Earth attacks from enemies, but can also be used on enemies to prevent them from absorbing Earth attacks to heal themselves (like Brothers).
X
X
X
Full-Life
One of the best in the game, it revives a character from KO with full HP, very useful in hard boss fights (last boss..etc).

Battle
Haste
Haste allows your characters to move faster, this lead to more frequent attacks during battle. This spell is very valuable during lost boss fight, a good technique is to use it in conjunction with Triple.
X
X
X
Holy
Holy inflicts light based damages on the enemy, this spell is very effective against undead creatures but is also against many other monsters. But don't bother trying it on human foes because it won't yield that much damages.
X
X
X
Life
The name of the spell says it all, life revives one of your characters with little energy.
X
X
X
Meltdown
This attack causes non-elemental damages and lower defense rating. Meltdown also decrease the enemy vitality to zero, it's great for bosses or monsters with high defensive rating.
X
X
X
Meteor
Meteor hits all enemies with meteorites, it's non-elemental and work pretty well if cast in Triple mode.
X
X
X
Pain
Pain contains blind, silence and poison, it does not cause any damages but is pretty good for status junction.
X
X
X
Protect
This spell increases your physical defensive strength, it wears off after a certain amount of times. This spell could be cast to your entire party with Triple.
X
X
X
Quake
It's earth based element, therefore it does not work against foes that have float cast on themselves. If you encounter an enemy that use a lot of quake, it'd be a good idea for you to cast float at the start of the battle.
X
X
X
Reflect
This spell cats a shield to one of your characters, it reflect magical attacks back to the caster. If an enemy casts reflect on himself do not cats magic on that foe because it'd just reflect back to you. Another thing that is worth noticing is do not cast healing spells on any of your characters in reflect mode because it'd just heal your enemy. If you really need to heal your characters just cast reflect on your enemy and use the healing spell on it instead of yourself (both gotta be in reflect mode).
X
X
X
Regen
Regen slowly starts to refill its target's HP for the remainder of the battle (unless Dispel is casted). This is very useful for long fights where you want to focus on attacking instead of curing.
X
X
X
Scan
Scan will give a description of its target and tell its HP, level, and weaknesses. This is a good spell to use on creature whose elemental weakness is unclear (Blobras, for example).
X
X
X
Shell
Shell casts a protective barrier on its target that doubles their defense against magical attacks. This is a great attack for boss fights that use a lot of magic, but it does wear off eventually. Use Triple if you want to cast Shell on everyone in the first turn.
X
X
X
Silence
A Silence spell, if successful, casts the Silence status on its target. A character that is silenced cannot use any magic or GF until they are cured of the Silence status. This is a good spell to use on heavy magic users, but doesn't always work.
X
X
X
Sleep
Causes sleep status on the victim, doesn't always work though. This status could be cure by receiving physical attacks from either your enemies or your party.
X
X
X
Slow
If successfully casted during battle, this spell would put your enemy in slow mode hence less chance to attack you, a very handy spell in tough battles.
X
X
X
Stop
This spell works exactly like slow except it stop your enemy completely from making any moves but it rarely works.
X
X
X
Thundaga
The best thunder magic, works well against machine or water enemies, you could also use this spell on normal creatures.
X
X
X
Thundara
Middle class thunder magic, could be refined from many items or draw from bosses and monsters.
X
X
X
Thunder
This is the basic thunder magic, works the same as the other two thunder magics but does not do good damages and not worth junction to any of your abilities.
X
X
X
Tornado
This spell causes Wind based damage to all enemies. This is very useful against multiple creatures who do not have a strong defense against wind. This spells main use, however, is junctioning, as it does it very well.
X
X
X
Triple
This is one of the most useful magics in the whole games, you could obtain it from either Odin or upgrade your DOUBLE magics. It allows you to cast three times in a row, good for healing your entire party or inflicting heavy damages to your enemies.
X
X
Ultima
Simply the best spell in the whole game, you should collect as many as you can. Not only does it give a very large amount of damage to an enemy, but since it is non-elemental it works against practically any enemy. It junctions better than any other magics.
X
X
X
Water
Water based element, it works very effective against Fire based creatures like Ruby Dragon or Bombs, it's properly one of the best spell for junctioning (early in the game that is).
X
X
X
Zombie
Causes your HP to decreases to zero but that character or monster does not die, it'll keep attacking until it's cured from Zombie status. Once it's cured that monster or character would be KO so it would be a wise idea to have it as one of your stat-defense.
